#Türkiye introduced laws making it harder to change #unions, so on #ThisDayInHistory in 1970 one of the largest #strikes there began. 150,000 in #İstanbul joined strikers in other cities. Soldiers & cops attacked, killing four workers, but within two years the laws were annulled.
A Danish victory in the #NorthernCrusades on #ThisDayInHistory in 1219 is still remembered in folk traditions on both sides. The #BattleOfLyndanisse, on the site of #Tallinn, saw the #pagan #Estonians launch a failed assault. Thousands died on either side but the #Crusaders won.
The #ProvisionalIRA carried out, on #ThisDayInHistory, the #1996ManchesterBombing. Warning meant that whilst 200 were injured, no-one died in the biggest bombing in England since #WorldWarII. 75,000 people were evacuated and, in 2024 sterling, total damage exceeded £1.3 billion.
#LAPD terrorist pigs assaulted a peaceful #strike by the #JanitorsForJustice movement in #SEIU union in 1990 on #ThisDayInHistory. The #BattleOfCenturyCity injuries were brutal, including a forced miscarriage, but the #union persisted and won concessions.
The United States is a #RogueState, content to rely on power and violate others' sovereignty at will. In a #SCOTUS decision on #ThisDayInHistory in 1992 it was judged defendants can still be tried if illegally abducted from other countries, even where #extradition treaties exist.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1648, #MargaretJones was hanged as a #witch in the #MassachusettsBayColony. Fear and #intolerance towards difference is a constant thread winding its way through human history. Such ignorance can, and must, be defeated by #reason, #science, and #education.
#WatTyler's #PeasantsRevolt seized #TowerOfLondon on #ThisDayInHistory in 1381, the only time it fell. #BlackDeath caused labour shortages so workers demanded #serfdom's end. Richard II agreed, then reneged, killed Tyler, & hanged 1500 peasants. The lesson: Don't trust the state.
The #SCOTUS decision in #PlylerVDoe, from #ThisDayInHistory in 1982, ruled that “all children, regardless of immigration status, have a constitutional right to a free public education from kindergarten to 12th grade.” This was a debate question in the 1980 presidential primary.
#StudentsForADemocraticSociety concluded their first congress & issued its #PortHuronStatement on #ThisDayInHistory in 1962. Take a moment and read the full statement — it is as powerful & salient now as it was in the '60s. It's time to realize its hopes.
