AI chatbots are increasingly designed to feel personal, engaging, and relational, but that can also create new opportunities for manipulation. CDT research examines how familiar dark patterns shape user choices and behavior in subtle ways.
📅 When: May 10-14, 2027 📍 Location: Downtown Pittsburgh, PA, USA ▶️ Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyKl... 🔗 Website: chi2027.acm.org @chi.acm.org #CHI2027

What draft? We're counting the days until the next big event in Pittsburgh #CHI2027. Save the date for the next ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. The theme is one near & dear to any Pittsburgher's heart - bridges! Can't wait to welcome the global HCI community to #Pittsburgh.
This year marks 50 years since Pittsburgh's most beloved neighbor stopped by our commencement. 🎓 In 1976, @cmu.edu awarded Fred Rogers an honorary doctorate in fine arts. At #CMU, our hearts remain in the work that #MrRogers championed for all of us. 🫶 Congrats to all graduates!

In this report, CDT Research draws on prior work in human-computer interaction and deceptive design disciplines to investigate how established dark patterns documented in other digital technology contexts may translate to AI chatbots –– particularly those positioned for social, emotional, or relational use.

In this article, Assistant Professor @perhaxis.bsky.social cautions that the rise of AI-generated workslop may reflect deeper shifts in workplace power dynamics, where AI is used to standardize & control work rather than meaningfully support employees. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

I’m excited to share that • Last week, I successfully defended my dissertation, & • In Jan 2027, I will start as a tenure-track assistant professor of Digital Media at Georgia Institute of Technology 🤠
Workslop refers to AI-generated work that seems polished but is flawed and in need of heavy corrections

Excited Carnegie Mellon students had the opportunity to meet with Jensen Huang, NVIDIA Founder and CEO. Jensen engaged firsthand with the cutting-edge research being conducted by CMU students. There was a snake robot, a robotic arm — even a robobuggy.

When does the design of conversational AI systems push users into acting in ways that are misaligned with their interests? Great @404media.co article about the new @cdt.org report on "dark patterns" by Ruchika Joshi, Adinawa Adjagodjou, and @mluria.bsky.social www.404media.co/new-study-re...
