The fovea is a region of high-acuity vision in the human retina with accelerated histogenesis, high cone density, and few rods. Wohlschlegel et al. now show that experimentally lowering RA induces these features in fetal retina, producing ectopic fovea-like development.

Tian, Liu et al. uncover a PATZ1 condensate-driven host defense that represses DNA virus transcription at PML nuclear bodies. Human bocavirus 1 overcomes this barrier via its NS2 protein, which disrupts PATZ1 condensates to unleash viral and proviral host gene expression.
Yang et al. report cryo-EM structures of the BoDV-1 L-P complex in three functional states. The structures reveal a minimalist architecture and functional degeneration of the L protein. The study uncovers an N-terminal autoinhibitory mechanism and a triple-suramin binding mode, offering insights into orthobornavirus replication and targeted antiviral design.

Altaf et al. report that SARS-CoV-2 viral recombination occurs during a chronic COVID-19 infection within individual hosts. This process can bring together mutations, especially in the N-terminal region, enabling both immune escape from neutralizing antibodies and adaptation to a range of host environments confronted by temperature gradients.
Zhang et al. demonstrate that PGE2-EP2/EP4 signaling drives the expansion of immunosuppressive VSIG4high macrophages and promotes immunotherapy resistance. The dual antagonist TP-18 depletes this macrophage subset and overcomes anti-PD-1 resistance in both colorectal cancer models and patient-derived tumor immune organoids.
Xu et al. show that pre-IBD induced by a combined high-fat diet and antibiotic exposure is alleviated by mEVs through enrichment of L. murinus and reduction of LPC levels. This microbiota-dependent mechanism reprograms TLR2 signaling toward an anti-inflammatory response, defining an mEV-modulated microbial strategy for mitigating intestinal inflammation.
Wu et al. show that enhanced aldehyde metabolism alleviates formaldehyde-mediated cell death in differentiating Fanconi anemia blood cells. This work illustrates that endogenous formaldehyde is a major source of genotoxicity that can be metabolically mitigated, highlighting a potential strategy for protecting sustained hematopoiesis in FA patients.
Wang et al. discovered that the endophytic insect-pathogenic fungus Metarhizium robertsii deploys barceloneic acid A to suppress insect production of the hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone, delaying larval pupation and death to extend fungal access to nutrient-rich larval hemolymph to maximize reproduction. It also represses plant defense protein PR2, promoting mutualism development.

Chia et al. develop a high-resolution multiplex surrogate neutralization assay to map human immunity gaps across high-risk beta-coronavirus and henipavirus families. Using multi-country pre-pandemic serosurveillance and vaccination/convalescent samples, they show limited pre-existing cross-immunity and demonstrate that cross-clade prime-and-boost strategies can elicit broader subgenus beta-coronavirus neutralizing antibodies.
