I read both Captain Storm and Lt. Cloud in their own comics, but never caught Gunner and Sarge outside of The Losers. I should hunt some of those down. I don’t suppose they’ve been collected.

When this movie came out, in Britain they filled in the rest of that sentence. “I aim at the stars… but I hit London.” (Apologies if you already knew that…)

Thanks, Zach. It is. I’m incredibly lucky that he was a writer and left so much of himself behind. I can pick up a book and hear his voice whenever I need to.

Ironically, this mindset would make them so much happier, so much more relaxed. William Burroughs said we were a nation of finks (paraphrasing), constitutionally incapable of minding our own business.

Yeah, I caught that, too. You can’t have it both ways. Either there are American flags at No Kings OR “the left has abandoned patriotism.” Not both. Only one of those two things is demonstrably true.

You wouldn't know from this panel (with beautiful art by @daveacosta.bsky.social), but it's mostly a fantasy series set in World War Two -- based on Dad's fanciful bedtime fairy tales about his own military service. A cross between BAND OF BROTHERS and THE PRINCESS BRIDE. Seriously.

But it is also a childhood memoir, a tribute, a snapshot of a time and a place, a collision between world history and family stories. The tension between the brutal reality of war, and the way that gets mythologized within a single generation. The Big Bad Wolf vs. a squad of US Cavalry, in 1944.

Thanks, Arlene. He was a very kind man, and taught me the crucial lesson -- by example -- that kindness is, in fact, a big part of masculinity done right. I don't recall him ever being unkind to me or my sister... and that's a hell of an epitaph for any man.
