Today marks 30 years since we identified the apicoplast, a relict plastid in human and animal parasites (PMID 8632819). Apicoplasts are the target of the widely used antimalarial prophylactic doxycycline, which has saved many thousands of malaria infections.
By mapping protein networks in an ancient ancestor of all complex life, a U. of Texas at Austin-led team found new genes connected to three rare disorders. It might yield hundreds more. New study in Cell Genomics cns.utexas.edu/news/researc... @edwardmarcotte.bsky.social @jbwallingford.bsky.social

A fossil nervous system meets modern neurobiology.
We found that a living comb jelly preserves neural architecture remarkably similar to those inferred from Cambrian fossils over 500 million years old 🤩.

NEW results on the #geometry of "knowing" in #LLMs
Where does an LLM's "I'm just guessing" live? Its "I'm fabricating"? Its "I'm deriving step by step"?
The answer is in distinct areas of #activation space -- and this shared geometry of #epistemic states is observed across diverse #OS models.
It is easy to think that sea squirts only display simple behaviors and do not significantly interact with their environment 🌊 New research lead by @olegtolstenkov.bsky.social, Sissel Norland and @mchatzigeorgiou.bsky.social proves this assumption wrong 👏⤵
