This is true-ish but only if you count exclusively American films. Tons of engaged films coming from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America. Some from Europe also

horror movies are having a moment because they're almost the only films speaking to the current condition, even when set in the past. big franchise stuff is terrified to deal with real modern concerns. arthouse dramas have largely disappeared into period pieces that aren't "about" right now.
