I'm at a music festival for the first time in a long while.
Things I would pay for now:
- a no smoking zone*
- a seat
- a massage
- better food
- glass cups
* Better yet, have smokers pay more for the privilege to be in a smoking zone.
Fuck I'm old now.
But once you look at it frame by frame, the amount of drawing gets kind of absurd.
The biggest thing I didn’t understand was the production math.
For each animation I need N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW.
So naturally I chose frame-by-frame animation, top-down/isometric view, 8 directions, lots of attacks, and outfit/style variants.
I’m at around 206 exported animation files now.
Not 206 unique animations, to be fair, since that includes directions, variants, combinations, etc.
In practice I draw 5 directions and mirror 3, but the mirrored ones still need shadow and shading fixes.
So it’s not exactly “flip and done”.
I still love the look of hand-drawn animation, but I understand the appeal of skeletal / rigged animation a LOT more now.
If my games ever sell well, expect optional boxed editions, printed manuals, maps, weird inserts, and all the stuff we used to find inside game boxes.
I miss that era.

For a first animation project, maybe this was a bit insane.

I really underestimated how much animation work a hand-drawn 8-directional game would need.
I’m new to animation. This game is literally the first thing I’ve ever animated.
I finally admitted I needed an animation tracking table and an attack table.
Seeing what’s done, half-done, and still missing in one place is already making a huge difference.
Jack is a living jockstrap.
His mission is simple: protect the Family Jewels from the Nutcracker Legion.
JACKSTRAP is a hand-drawn top-down arena survivor coming soon to Steam.
