"We already live in a world where you walk outside and there are billboards and signs that are obvious AI slop. That’s become part of our visual reality. To me, generative AI feels less like innovation than a symptom of a broader cultural and economic rot."

Since I do not see the New World Screwworm issue going away any time soon, I’m just gonna make a thread I can pin to my profile.

DEI Coordinator: [very pained face]
Me: As the departmental giftschrank for Horrible History, I've got this one. They asked.
DEI Coordinator: Thank you. But you are supposed to warn them before you answer that it's very racist and awful.
Me: [nods] Yup.
Them: Oh no.

A good thread on screwworms. Talking to an entomologist last year, he also added that the pandemic was the first domino. Scientists couldn’t get to the facilities, couldn’t get out into the field to check outbreak reports.
5/ Experts point to several factors for why it came back:
1️⃣Cattle smuggling outside control zones
2️⃣In early 2025, roughly 15,000 USDA positions were eliminated, and a USAID-funded monitoring project was terminated
3️⃣ The loss of specialized expertise as generations of entomologists retire
