From my archive of my capsule book reviews: "Recent Reads: Plague Birds. Jason Sanford's far future SF is a tale of a reborn Earth, thousands of years after civilisation collapsed. With an AI in her blood, a Plague Bird is justice embodied. But her world needs more than justice. A powerful debut."
After a day charging off its solar panel, the Velux window opener we spent Sunday fitting is working and integrated into the house control systems. We also ended up testing its rain sensor by not noticing that it was drizzling. The window closed automatically. I had to bring the washing in myself.
A swift photobombs the Red Arrows. #accidentalbirds #birds #birding #redarrows #swift
Recent Reads: All Tomorrows. C. M. Kosemen's classic of speculative biology traces out not millions, but billions of years of the human future, from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs, and an inevitable fade. We come from nothing and we go to nothing, but we do leave a mark across the skies.
The automatic Velux window opener we fitted at the weekend in action. I am fascinated by the chain that unfolds from the motor box to become a rigid rod that can move an entire window…
Low stakes conspiracy theory: the UK government is banning under-16s from social media to create a generation of cybersecurity specialists with a background in breaking authentication and authorization services. After all, they turned us 8-bit Spectrum and BC Micro users into programmers...
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #YourChoice any bird capture. I remain fond of this black-headed gull flying over a frozen Wimbledon Park Lake from earlier this year. #birds #birding #wildlifephotography #wimbledonpark #gull
I now have a Homekit automation that reads the temparature at the bedroom radiator, and if it is over a certain amount, it opens the window... (At some point I need to disconnect the Velux controller from Homekit, link it to @home-assistant.io, and then reexpose to Homekit for voice control.)
Another view of the Red Arrows from Saturday's Trooping the Colour flypast, as the aircraft headed west across London after flying down the Mall. So here's a line of Hawks and Lightnings heading towards Heathrow, somewhere over Fulham. #aircraftphotography #troopingthecolour #redarrows
Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #InFlight, birds in flight. The alt is #BlurBirds, blurry bird shots. A twofer then, with an Anna's Hummingbird hovering over a San Jose garden fountain. The bird is in focus, its wings are moving blurs. #birds #birding #wildlifephotography #california #hummingbirds
