‘For her solo exhibition in Mexico, 1953, Kahlo's doctors advised her that she was too sick to attend. Defying orders, she arrived at Galería Arte Contemporaneo by ambulance, was carried in on a stretcher, and stayed in her four-poster bed which had been moved directly from her home to the gallery.’
