I’m happy and honoured to be the first guest in this new show (welcome back, Chris) and to pay due respect to Bill Harry for creating Mersey Beat, now 65 years ago.
Interesting – I've not noticed this before. You could be right. John was no football fan, and I don't think he ever publicly mentioned England's World Cup victory, but maybe someone gave him the charm and he felt like hanging it there.

@marklewisohn.bsky.social wondering if you had any idea about this little charm John had on his guitar for the '66 U.S. tour? I don't think he had it during the Tokyo and Manilla shows. Looks like a soccer ball so my theory is he hung it up when England won the World Cup right between those shows.
That's impressive research. I'm sorry I've nothing to add to it.
