I mean, all I can do is ask authors to be honest about it. I have neither the ability nor inclination to police this sort of thing.
Right now, many pay services use your location to enforce blackouts on in-market fans. It should be the other way around. I understand blackouts are there to encourage ticket sales but I am very skeptical that makes long run financial sense for anybody.
That said: - The Wow! Signal is an important case study and cautionary tale - The Drake Equation helps justify SETI (in fact, it understates the case) - The Fermi Paradox played a big role in shaping SETI - There are good general reasons to look for technology like ours (among other things)
It should be uncontroversial that sports teams subsidized with public dollars should have all of their games broadcast for free to in-market fans. No blackouts. No monthly pay subscription needed (basic cable fees are tolerable).
My new arXiv endorsement policy: If I don't know you and have never heard of you, your paper needs to: 1) be accepted at a peer-reviewed journal and 2) be entirely written by the authors and not in any part by an AI Thoughts? 🔭🧪
Appreciating this transparency by my local newspaper.
