🗣️Ian Thornhill, who wasn't involved in the study, said: “Of particular value in this study are the timescales involved (avg. 8 years). In England, BNG has only been established for around 2 years. As such, there are few (if any) comparable data yet available.”
Solar panels on rewetted peatland can encourage an interesting mix of birds, with both wetland and woodland species recorded at a solar park in Germany. Reported in @newscientist.com, the findings from a new @aer-ese-bes.bsky.social study suggest a climate and nature win-win for this novel land use

The findings suggest that while offsets aren’t perfect replacements for existing grasslands, they can still provide important resources for wild pollinators. When implemented well, offsets can be as good as existing sites in terms of wild pollinator species richness.

Policies like England's Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and the EU’s No Net Loss policy aim to compensate nature lost to developments. But how effective are they?
They found that the offset grasslands supported twice the number of wild bees compared to existing grasslands and supported more species of wild bees. Hoverfly numbers were comparable across both. The number of flower species was also comparable, but the types of flowers differed.

In a new @jappliedecology.bsky.social  study, researchers from @w-u-r.bsky.social have compared 20 newly created offset grasslands with 20 existing grasslands across the Netherlands, surveying both pollinators and vegetation.
