I don’t understand why people are fantasising about dark factories as a future for software development. It’s almost like software engineers have no understanding of the reality of physical manufacturing. The cost of R&D to set up a dark factory is astronomical and makes no sense for one off items.
We are treating this change as if it is the first time we’ve seen automation as a society. It isn’t. It isn’t even the first time we’ve dealt with the fear that automation would eliminate all jobs. We have been dealing with the effects of automation since the invention of the steam engine.
