It’s all kind of abstract. We never see the actual civilization in peril. We never see Soran’s family or see his nexus-fantasy or get any deeper connection to what he’s feeling. All the emotion is sourced in exposition.
Kind of a shame because Jim and I were committed to reading it for the podcast if it ever came out.

At the same time it’s hard to see how you could plug those holes—lay out a bunch of exposition about what the rules are preventing Picard from resolving this situation in seven other and better ways—without grinding the movie to a halt.

All the nexus stuff is a little undercooked. Like it’s sort of stuck between “This is just a device to make the plot happen, don’t think about it too much” and “The movie is ABOUT this.”

I was surprised rewatching it how deep we are into the movie until it happens. It’s like how in Jason Takes Manhattan they’re on a boat for most of the movie.
