Reasons for writers to use "big" words:
1) The "big" word conveys a nuance of meaning that the "normal" word may not, being too vague
2) The "big" word sounds cool (as in, the word actually does sound cool and not like the writer is trying to get sapiosexually laid)
3) You fucking feel like it
