I donāt talk openly about it much, but there has been so much poor medical news on my partnerās side and they are truly lovely people. Between that and fresh PhD life Iāve been emotionally and mentally exhausted. Hence limited artwork or interacting with anyone (I socially withdrawal when tired).
I know some of you will understand this, and others not. And thatās ok! I want to be very open about my academic journey. Itās been hard. Itāll get harder.
One year later and she still looks just as great! Canāt wait to add a dragon to the other side.

We have some crazy tornados here tonight. Using our cat as the litmus test of how panicked we should be as she usually freaks with storms. (We are watching the radar too)
Aphids are the coolest! Today Iām lucky to be reading about their gene expression and how variations in which genes expressed tells us about their ability to feed from different host plants. What a cool world we get to share with such amazing organisms!
My PI is so supportive in making sure I take care of myself. I constantly feel super lucky to be their student!
And who knows, maybe I can start a new aphid colony if I find any cuties on my travels.
Tomorrow my partner and I make the big drive to visit family down south. 18hrs in the car!
However, itās lovely getting the home in order so we can come back to tidy and clean space. Itās my favorite treat to myself.
Hoping this trip helps alleviate some burnout Iāve been struggling with.
Iām really proud of myself because writing research proposals is difficult. It takes so much background reading and thoughtful understanding to write. Iām a slow writer so piecing together thoughts takes me a while and when I do Iām always really happy with my progress. Slow and consistent matters.
