Scientists at Gladstone Institutes have developed a thinking microscope powered by AI.
They can ask it to figure out what it takes to make sick cells with Parkinson’s disease behave like healthy ones. Beyond that goal, the scientists are not giving the microscope any instructions.
How do brain cells change with age? How are liver cells impacted when someone takes a new medicine? What happens to lung cells after decades of smoking?
Where does the brain send its waste?
Research led by Gladstone Investigator Andrew Yang mapped the pathways that help clear proteins from the brain.

The Bay Area has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading biopharma hubs—and Gladstone is helping shape its future. Earlier this year, we announced plans to expand in Mission Bay with new lab space that will support scientists working at the intersection of biology, medicine, and AI.
For Cancer Immunotherapy Month: When Will Immunotherapy Work on Common Cancers?
Gladstone Investigator Karin Pelka is helping answer that question by studying how tumors interact with the immune system in order to make immunotherapy more effective for cancers like breast, lung, and prostate cancer.
A team led by Jennifer Doudna developed an innovative chromatin-shredding technique shown to destroy cancer cells carrying a prevalent mutation while keeping healthy cells intact.

Antibiotic-resistant infections are a growing global threat. Gladstone has launched the Center for PhAIge Therapy, bringing together AI, engineering, and phage biology to develop new ways to fight drug-resistant bacteria.
Gladstone scientists have developed a thinking microscope that can conduct its own experiments, with the ultimate goal of treating neurodegenerative diseases.
Drug-resistant infections cause millions of deaths each year. Gladstone is tackling the challenge with the Center for PhAIge Therapy, combining AI, bioengineering, and phage research to develop next-generation treatments for antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Mid-cap buyers, improved capital raising climate, and reshoring of manufacturing are shaping how much and where biopharmas choose to grow.
For Cancer Immunotherapy Month, Karin Pelka answers questions about how immunotherapy can treat patients with solid tumors and the challenges that scientists are working to overcome.
In an era where antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections are causing an alarming number of fatalities worldwide, a pioneering initiative at the Gladstone Institutes is forging a path toward
