The ideal is to use both. Having the practical on set and use CG for complex movements or enhancements. Or for creative transformations.

Werewolf hot take: I am very against the "practical is better than cg" discourse. Non is better. Thay are complementary to eachother. If the cg looks bad is usually bad direction, super short deadlines or many last minute changes.

If you only use cg without practical reference and design it can look crapy since cg artist have to guess how the creature reacts to light.
If you only use practical, the creatures usually look stiff or very much like a puppet.
