In 2026, this no longer reads as savvy, but rather as naive: these people are True Believers. They are segregationists in power because the Trump and DeSantis regimes are segregationist. Calling re-segregation a boogeyman downplays the bigotry driving this dynamic and obscures why it is so bad.
