Spencer, on the other hand, is more free with his feelings. He's not a big crier or anything, but he prefers to accept and recognize his feelings. He wept openly at his grandfather's funeral and doesn't think tears are anything to be ashamed of. Bruce and the rest of the family share this attitude.

Resources for Indie Authors
It's a bit of a survival mechanism. Both the uncle that raised her after her parents died and the Blackboots viewed tears as a weakness to be either be admonished or exploited. Things would have to be very bad indeed for her to cry at all, especially in front of other people.
Indie Book Spotlight
For Spencer it would be a classic "kid finds a weird creature and keeps it secret from everyone else until more and more shenanigans occur and the creature finally breaks loose causing chaos." Except the creature would be something undead. And Bruce would be in on it. Think ET or the Waterhorse.
