Had a long chat recently about how civics, even when people get it, doesn't really teach people how anything works in practice. In civics, you learn Congress alone declares war. This is not true. The filibuster, reconciliation — I took civics and these were things I learned only by being too online.

there's a Allan Bloom book on the "American religion" and one thing i think Bloom was basically right on is that 95% of the time, whatever American evangelicals *think* they're doing is in practice basically a form of Gnosticism
