Not really trying to put a bow on that and tag it 'good' 'bad' or the like, just that genres don't really remain statically sound over time purely because they exist as concepts to abide by. Which I feel makes or breaks those who FEEL that shift, but can't necessarily process it (yet)
Like, not necessarily "Trying to be funny". But moreso attempting to appease an audience by emulating what they think "being funny" means rather than going by loose guidelines of what the comedian personally thinks is funny
I think a reason why people feel restricted when trying to be comedic isn't strictly because of some flat observation between the audience and shock value, but that due to how entertainment and society evolved over time, more people view comedy as "putting on an act" than just "telling a joke".
