As FIFA (or the start of the COVID pandemic) has proven, it is very possible for cities, provinces, countries to move quickly and to spare no expense when they feel something is urgent. Which is proof that they simply do not see any urgency in the many existential threats we face today

In 2005, I went to a production of "Star Trek In The Park" in Portland's Cathedral Park. That year the reenacted "Journey to Babel." In the fight scene between Kirk and the Andorian, an audience member's dog rushed the actors and barked at them to stop. No picture, alas.
