Does branch excision bias our #photosynthesis data? New paper led by #MarcellaCross shows excision increases water potential but reduces photosynthesis in most species, with trait-dependent effects, so excised branches underestimate intact rates.

Many consecutive annual fires? 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Not extreme nor a problem for the Cerrado grass layer!!! More like a solution!🔥🔥🔥 See community, functional, and population responses of Cerrado grasses to seven consecutive annual fires in our new manuscript out today in Open Access!

Muchas gracias Imma 🥹♥️ I am extremely grateful to my supervisors @ioliverasmenor.bsky.social and Andy Hector for their support and guidance along the way. You have truly shaped these last few years, helping me become a better researcher and a better person. Thank you so much for this opportunity! 🎓😊
Ecosystems and Biodiversity DPhil student, @navarrosales.bsky.social, has recently submitted a paper showing how Cerrado trees exhibit a productivity–fire tolerance trade-off. Read about it in recent blog post here: www.oxfordecosystems.org/post/functio...

The data paper for the 7th Plant Functional Traits Course has been published! We sampled 171 species across an 800 m elevation gradient in Witsieshoek, South Africa. The dataset covers morphological traits, leaf assimilation, thermal imaging, ecosystem fluxes and much more:

Just back from tutoring within the @oxfordgeography.bsky.social field course to Tenerife 🗻
Over the last week, the second-year students visited different sites across the island, and completed short research projects 🔎
Our group measured pollinator abundance across land-use and climate gradients 🐝
Check out the early view of my second PhD article! Focusing on woody productivity dynamics of Cerrado savanna trees, we analyse how NPP changes across different fire regimes, and explore how these responses are mediated by functional traits 🔥🌿 @ioliverasmenor.bsky.social

Yesterday I passed my PhD viva! 🥳Thank you to my examiners Nikki Stevens and @forestplots.bsky.social for their feedback and for the discussion about forests, savannas and everything in between. Working on fire/climate impacts on productivity through functional traits has really been fascinating :)
New paper out today @currentbiology.bsky.social led by Toby Jackson and Lucy Beese shows the profound impact that liana cutting has on the structural recovery of logged tropical forests

This week, the Ecosystems Lab welcomed back @ioliverasmenor.bsky.social. During her visit, she shared updates from her research on experimental fire reintroduction and reflected on years of collaborative work in the Brazilian Cerrado. Read more here: www.oxfordecosystems.org/post/collabo...
Cerrado trees exhibit a productivity–fire tolerance trade-off. Bark protection and light adaptation help maintain NPP under high fire intensities, as both structural and acquisitive strategies mediate...
Dr Imma Oliveras Menor shares her research on vegetative phenology and fire response strategies in the Brazilian Cerrado.
