so here we go, my pitch for how you'd fix Star Trek Discovery is that S2 goes into S3's plot and setting, but we say "this is a sector of space the Federation has little presence in & hasn't explored much", the events of S1 mean Discovery is more on its own, and the look gets a bit more TOS (1)

it just hit me that you could've done "there's some lawless areas with an Orion-headed syndicate called the Emerald Chain" without actually having to pop to another timeline, Discovery can just... go to the bit the Federation's not in or has minor presence. Like TOS did a lot!

This reply made me realise that a big part of Discovery's problem is that they immediately weave such a massive continuity net that they're stuck. They can't retool their early mistakes (or at least feel they can't without annoying nerds), except by doing a massive time jump bsky.app/profile/cepm...

I think this goes all the way back to "lets do a prequel but look different, act different etc to the TOS stuff we're supposed to be right before", "oh no this isn't working out and we're kind of locked into And Then Kirk". If they'd _started_ post-TNG they'd have been better off
