yeah it seems to vary a lot from episode to episode
in context it's not really (the fact that the characters are all highly stylized humanoid dogs is rarely significant and i forget about it pretty quickly)

lol. moriarty is a (purple) dog. cats show up a couple times but they're nonsentient house pets or feral animals. i hadn't considered how weird that is until just now
not really an anime knower but i've been enjoying the 80s anime Sherlock Hound of late. partly directed by hayao miyazaki who seems to have primarily taken it as an opportunity to draw a lot of steampunk contraptions. great city pop–adjacent soundtrack too
