I live near three shaker historic sites so let it be known that my opinion of them is a little more complex than “shakers bad and culty.” Despite the extremist belief they were founded on, they held some progressive views, which the character limit will stop me from listing

Context for those who don’t know who the Shakers are: a sect of Christianity founded in the late 18th century in the US by Ann Lee, an Englishwoman who claimed to be the messiah and proclaimed that sex was the original sin. All members were celibate. Marriage was banned.
