1. On 4 Aug 1964, the destroyers MADDOX & TURNER JOY detected radar contacts moving towards them from North Vietnam, & fired on the contacts without identifying them visually, because it was a stormy night. They even directed air strikes, led by then-CDR Jim Stockdale, against those targets.
