“But
you try facing eternity
with thunder, with knowing
that sound will never end, with
knowing how swiftly
things catch fire.”

Years back, I saw a book with a dragon on the cover. Of course - of course - I had to read it. This turned out to be DRAGON'S BLOOD, whose protagonist STOLE A BABY DRAGON.
I was absolutely enthralled.
Years later, I encountered her reworked fairy tales. Seeing what she could and did do with that form was a revelation to me.
It's safe to say that I would not have spent so much time on my own reworked and original fairy tales without her examples.
And of course, Yolen continued to work in speculative poetry throughout her life, helping to keep the field alive and burning.
Her memory IS a blessing.

Me with Jane Yolen at Boskone in 2012, hand-delivering to her the first copy of her poetry collection THE LAST SELCHIE CHILD, which I published with A Midsummer Night's Press.
I started the press in 1991, when I had access to a letterpress as an undergrad, & published broadsides by her.
