I'm seeing the phrase "assistive" being used to describe stuff like "fact-checking" uses for generative AI, and I don't think people realise using a language-generating system for research or 'data analysis' or whatever is WORSE than using it to write body text

If you build three gigawatts of solar in the desert, and then use all of that to power the melting of computer chips to run GenAI (instead of helping to push fossil fuels out of the system through an undersea cable to Asia), what's the benefit to climate, or biodiversity or environment?
