I have a thought about this problem, the lack of viable p2p services that compete with things like Youtube and Instagram. The answer is always "users lack sophistication", but then they build the system to enforce dependency on the corporation.

I would wager this is a side effect of being patterned into random advice from the internet being generally reliable. Unreliable sources wither on the internet (except flat earth stuff), but within a neural model, are given equal weight.

This is a pretty interesting trend, really. Ticket sales have also been centralized into big companies. Peer-to-peer was (could be) a fascinating competition against massive corporations. There is a strong parallel to perception of p2p as solely criminal and weed/hemp being criminalized outright.
