Whale Necropolis, and weird fishes. Glorious chewy carcasses, the real circle of life: ‘we report a vast whale necropolis extending 1,200 km along the floor of the Indian Ocean, comprising 5 modern whale-fall communities and 476 fossil cetaceans.’ www.nature.com/articles/s41...
If true, I have serious concerns about this being a war crime. Under the laws of armed conflict: Proportionality: the military advantage has to outweigh the anticipated civilian harm. Hard to see what military advantage would outweigh robbing 20k people of drinking water.

What a great idea -- super useful and will be a really interesting benchmark for years to come
Researchers uncovered an enormous deep-sea accumulation of whale remains in the southeastern Indian Ocean, showing long-term, specialized ecosystems and an extensive fossil record that offers new insi...

We are officially in an El Nino now. The forecast explicitly calls for it to peak as a Very Strong El Nino in the Nov-Jan period. Expect that the Earth will break its record for warmest temperatures on record. 🔥

We all know that what Israel is doing is barbaric. How could we not. The divide is between those who want to shine a spotlight on its actions and those who want to turn that spotlight off.

This week we have @afossilpreparator.bsky.social training our Palaeontology & Geology undergraduate students in fossil preparation skills in our new fossil prep lab. Another reason to consider the University of Birmingham if you are interested in studying Palaeontology at university.
The day has finally come: The Story of Birds is out in the UK! 🇬🇧 We launched it last night at the sparkling new @waterstones.bsky.social at Battersea Power Station. Hosted by fellow bird book author @matthewstadlen.bsky.social I hope friends in my adopted home of Britain like this book!

We @journalsystpal.bsky.social commissioned a series of short review articles on the systematics of major fossil groups from leading experts, and asked them to speculate on where their field is going. The first, by Otega-Hernandez, is out now: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.....

In this week's #FossilFiles podcast, we FINALLY discuss Prototaxites, the giant phallic Devonian life-form that might be a totally unknown branch of the tree of life. This is one of the coolest papers we've ever done. Listen here or wherever you get your pods: fossils.libsyn.com/the-mysterio...
