One thing I will say on licensing, especially for manga, is that there isn’t a lot of transparency on how it actually works, and most of the people with substantial knowledge on the matter aren’t in positions where they can publicly talk about it.

My trip to Japan has been super productive but I kinda regret not setting aside more time to relax. It’s been 95% work and meetings 🫠
Another fantastic cover by @darrenvogtart.bsky.social!
Volume 1 of Horon of the Closed Country comes out in print next month, and Volume 2 will be out before the end of the year!
Coming from personal experience, printing in India can be a nightmare at times, as many economical printers there don’t know how to print manga without constant supervision, but it’s very interesting seeing Kodansha take the leap into the market.
I had mentioned this to many publishers since starting MMB: Language is less the barrier in India (manga readers in tier 1 cities know English), but more so the price of books because of import costs.
I’ve been fortunate enough to be placed around people who were much more knowledgeable about these things than me and take the time to teach me about it, and tbh, that paved the way for me to do what I do now.
Some folks have asked me before “How do I know X manga publisher has seen my license recc to them?”
The answer: You kinda don’t and that’s normal.
