The university has told The Mill it is treating the allegations with 'the utmost seriousness', adding that it has undertaken a formal investigation and cultural review.

How did one message uncover years of alleged sexual harassment at the University of Manchester?
In April, Charlotte Buttercase, a final-year medic, told her year group's Whatsapp chat about the strange, anonymous call she'd received in the middle of the night - one that had left her 'feeling tiny'.
A man had called claiming to be suicidal, then asked for sexual favours while other men seemed to laugh in the background. This man had phoned on No Caller ID and Charlotte didn't recognise his voice, but he seemed to know information about her that only a fellow student could be privy to.
Once Charlotte messages her year group, students start reciting similar accounts: late-night calls from anonymous men who call them gender-based slurs or tell them to kill themselves. Charlotte says 32 women have come forward; she's written an open letter to the university urging an investigation.

Alongside Jen's fab piece, for anyone interested I'd also recommend this recent @manchestermill.bsky.social piece where a walk through the (desolate) 80s city centre is recreated, showing just how much has changed (in the centre at least) down the decades.

If you’ve looked at our homepage today, you might have noticed the progress bar has turned a very encouraging shade of white...
As of this afternoon, 506 brilliant people have joined our campaign 🙌
We are exactly at the halfway mark!
If you only went off the headlines, you’d think everything was turning a bit bleak 🤧
But it’s not the full picture.
Across Sheffield, there are lots of people quietly doing things that make life better - without much attention, and usually without much help.
If we reach 1,000 members, we’ll publish a monthly Good News Edition - properly reporting those stories.
Because these people deserve to have their stories told 🗣️
