It was an absolute pleasure to speak at Epping Forest District Museum last night about Roman Colchester. Also had a quick look around their current exhibition β€œTown and Country: Life in Roman Durolitum”. Some wonderful objects and very well put together!
On this day, 13 June 1648, parliamentary forces reached Colchester and started a siege that would last 11 weeks. Residents of the town were forced to eat domestic animals and tallow from candles. This painting by Peter Froste imagines one of the parliamentary encampments.
