1) Will literally never happen and is almost entirely impossible to define sufficiently that it wouldn’t interfere with other things like spreadsheets
2) Beyond stupid - would basically destroy most video streaming except it wouldn’t because VPNs exist
Just caught up on the flagship show from what’s supposed to be our premier left-wing new media outlet, and fuck me was the discussion of the social media ban utterly dismal… A deluge of poorly-evidenced fogeyish moral panic arguments, and barely any meaningful engagement with opposition views
Also, right: requiring real names has famously resolved the problem of dis/misinformation, abuse/harassment, hate speech, other harms, etc., on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other platforms disallowing anonymity
Went back and forth for ages over Ibrahim Mbaye when playing the @theanfieldwrap.bsky.social Transfer Committee Game the other week. Didn’t punt on him in the end… Wish I had now, so I could be smug about that goal (poor keeping notwithstanding), but consider this post a weaker attempt at lording it
Okay, so:
1) Gonna need to see some receipts for this;
2) What do you think these “other routes” are, online, that won’t also be classed as social media and banned if they actually serve this purpose?
For balance: yes, these are good, sensible recommendations
Aha! Yes, I too am very smart and have not considered — or at least do not want to give airtime to — the many very good reasons why people might not want to (might not be safe to!) use their real identities online, or think it’s fine to just tell those people not to be online then.
Very late to this, but I’ve just caught up with @andrewkersley.bsky.social’s story for @londonermag.bsky.social about Joan and Tracey Turnell.
A harrowing, profoundly sad, but wonderful piece of journalism.
