And certainly no evidence out there that making citizenship increasingly more elusive for migrants (through longer waiting times, higher fees, prohibitive language and knowledge requirements) helps them find their way in destination countries, or benefits receiving societies as a whole.

And, yes, identifying the causal effect of citizenship acquisition on migrants’ employment outcomes is tricky. But, notwithstanding mixed findings here and there, overall the evidence is in the direction that an accessible pathway to citizenship is a positive catalyst for a variety of outcomes.
