Over the summer, Stair Society members received the Society's latest volume: 'Jus Feudale, Book 2' by Thomas Craig, translated and edited by Dr Leslie Dodd. We hope everyone received their copy and are enjoying taking a look at this latest volume!
SAVE THE DATE! The Stair Society AGM and Annual Lecture will be taking place on Saturday 15 November 2025 in Edinburgh. More details to follow, but we are pleased to announce that Professor Julian Goodare, University of Edinburgh, will be delivering a talk on ‘Witchcraft and Scots Law’.
The Annual Lecture will take place at 11:30 in the Mackenzie Building, Old Assembly Close, Edinburgh. It will follow the Society's AGM, which is taking place at 10:30-11:00.
Update: The Stair Society is delighted that Professor Julian Goodare, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Edinburgh, will be giving the Society's Annual Lecture on Saturday 15 November 2025 in Edinburgh. The title of his talk is 'Witchcraft and Scots Law'.
The lecture is not restricted to members of the Society, but non-members wishing to attend are asked to advise the Secretary and Treasurer in advance of their intention to attend. Non-members can do this by emailing: [email protected].
The British Legal History Conference will be taking place this summer in Nottingham. Scottish legal history will be well represented at the conference, with Society Vice President Hector MacQueen presenting a keynote lecture.
Other papers at the conference include topics such as: Scots lawyers during the Enlightenment, the Scottish Justiciary Court during the 17th century, and solatium (a Scottish remedy, namely damages for non-pecuniary harm). See the link above to access the draft programme for BLHC 2026,
