2/3 of all energy going into the energy system globally goes to waste.
@chrisjardineenergy.bsky.social discusses energy efficiency with @nickeyre.bsky.social.
Energy efficiency is responsible for more decarbonization than renewable energy, and still holds huge potential.

the photoenergetic power conversion efficiency of solar is ~20%; corn is ~1%. (20× less efficient)
an EV takes ~0.15 kWh/km; an ICE car uses ~0.75 kWh/km. (5× less efficient)
"99% less land per mile driven" is not hyperbole. it's a pretty solid estimate for average vehicles and energy systems.

1/ A climate-focused thread 🧵 on the new Danish government programme, listing what I see as key initiatives (and omissions) regarding overall climate policy, mobility and related areas (energy and land use planning).

Farming as a business is now with the Ministry of Business, so on par with other businesses.
And other issues relating to compliance is with relevant ministries (justice, environment,…) - again like other businesses.

Put wind or solar on the land that grows ethanol corn. Run electric vehicles off the power. Use 99% less land per mile driven, at far lower cost. Let farmers use the freed-up land to do actual farmer stuff, like growing real food for humans and being good custodians of land for future generations.

“Politicians and business leaders said we had to slow down the push for renewables, but now in the current crisis they complain that our energy costs have jumped, and that is because we rely too much on fossil fuels.”

The new Danish government programme was announced today👇.
I'm still reading the details, but so far I want to credit it for mainstreaming the benefits of the green transition.
An example is that the 85% CO2 reduction target (increased from 82%) is in the section about 'A more prosperous Denmark'.

Also E15 cost savings are an illusion. Yes E15 currently costs less per gallon at the pump but 1) it’s less energy dense so cars don’t go as far per gallon & 2) it’s more corrosive so gas stations would have to upgrade tanks/pumps & would likely pass on costs to consumers, raising prices at the pump
I think it would be wise to formulate an independent policy on data centers, specifying strict demands on energy efficiency, self-sufficiency of some green electricity, ability to act flexibly on the grid, placement of centers for easy grid connection and easy utlilization of waste heat, and so on.
