The croft is literally awash with orchids: purples & pinks in a great range of size, leaf/flower types & micro-habitat, dozens of nationally scarce pale cream Lesser Butterfly orchids & the first few spikes of rare tiny whites (Pseudorchis albida).
I am very happy 🤗
After all the rain, this evening feels like Christmas 🥰
Yes, boo, it's pouring down today in the NW Highlands but LOOK at these meadow buttercups positively ROCKING it in the sun yesterday.
EVERY single one is pointing his/her face to the golden orb in the sky 💛
What a beautiful, windswept day.
Ah! Summer in the NW Highlands. Blue mountains, green moors, all garlanded with wildflowers and birdsong.
I love seeing the croft come to life, revealing stories from the past, full of hope for the future. On the high, very steep river terrace are dozens of pretty-in-pink heath spotted orchids, on the modern rapidly rewilding riverbank, bluebells -(memories of old woodland) & broad-leaved marsh orchid.
Chance meetings with Kiwis, a house martin's residence, wildflowers blooming, warm sunny days and beach games with the grandchildren.
A new blog for the start of summer.

The latest in the series of letters with Lochaber crofter Kirsteen Bell for @caughtbytheriver.bsky.social's Coast, Croft & Hill: letters from the NW Highlands.
In April & May we talked about nightjars, spinning, cuckoos and wildflowers.
Happy reading 🤗

Two friends, each with their heart and sense alive to the world around them, words travelling in the air between them.
Happy reading indeed.
Croft, Coast and Hill: From unfurling green tips to cuckoos and nightjars, Spring reasserts itself on Kirsteen Bell and @annieworsley.bsky.social’s respective crofts www.caughtbytheriver.net/2026/05/crof...

Warmth comes to us, eventually. And when it does, the greening and flowering of garden, croft and valley follow swiftly. For a time, the ‘hottest’ yellows come from marsh marigolds and gorse bushes…
