One day, a person offers one of them something that would give godlike power over the other.
Maybe that’s literally becoming god. Maybe that’s the other is forced to live in a nanociv in their care.
The chosen agrees, immense power is given. For both scenarios, I’m assuming the massive size difference applies. God scenario can size-shift, but the power difference is still palpable.
The dynamic of their relationship doesn’t change at first, as the chosen is still keeping cordial with their SO.
Present-day, people will occasionally ask the brooding ex-SO about what it was like to be with their deity (the chosen has a religion with their new SO now).
And the ex-SO has to deal with seeing the chosen living happy without them.
Seeing that level of happiness they used to have, and more.
