Good news! Ministers have finally given green light to new #NaturalHistory GCSE. We’ve campaigned so long for this! Big hats off to tireless advocate Mary Colwell 🙌 Now our young people will have a chance to get to know & love the natural world, to feel awe & wonder, & gain skills to protect it 🌷🌳🦡

Long-awaited course to examine human effects on natural world and explore everyday ways to aid biodiversity
Connectomes are accelerating, from the ~300 neurons of C. elegans 40 years ago to the fly brain last year (FAFB, bbc.com/news/articles/c0lw0nxw71po). The BANC is the next big step, a full CNS, brain and nerve cord together, a powerful hypothesis-generation engine. 2/18
NEW PAPER, JUST OUT! 👀
Insects from the '70s and '80s were already collecting microplastic, decades before the term microplastic even existed. 🤯
A thread on the surprising history of this pollutant and the incredible insect larvae that helped us uncover it. 🐛
Let's dive in! 🧵👇 1/x
Now published - the #BANC! A full central nervous system (CNS) connectome of a limbed animal at single-synapse resolution, enabling us to follow sensory-motor arcs and understand how the CNS controls the body. rdcu.be/fncjS. #neuroscience. Video by @quorumetrix.bsky.social 1/18
Leaf-mimicking katydids don’t just use their funky camouflage to survive, they’re using it to find love too! 🥰🍃💘 New paper out now in #ProcB @royalsocietypublishing.org (Photo cred: Christian Ziegler): doi.org/10.1098/rspb... 1/n
now that the full version is out, the graphical abstract needed an update... here you go.

Our central complex paper with Yi Peng Toh, Theodora Loupasaki, Basil el Jundi, @eahodge.bsky.social & @ebablab.bsky.social has now emerged, like a butterfly, in it's final form. Some heavy grant-writing induced heterochrony has delayed eclosion, but...finally done.

New article: We studied how volumes of different brain regions vary between workers, males & alate females in 2 species of Australian ants. First paper from Saroja Ellendula's PhD thesis! Article is available here: bit.ly/4fVwCIN @neuroethology.org @austentsoc.bsky.social @animbehav.bsky.social

A cognitive adaptation in Heliconius butterflies, accompanied by strikingly divergent changes in two principal insect integration centres, reveals that neural circuits can differ strongly in their pro...

Neural circuits have evolved to produce cognitive processes that facilitate a species variable behavioural repertoire. Underlying this variation are evolutionary forces, such as selection, that operat...
