The Martin JRM Mars flying boat was conceived as a long range patrol bomber, scaled up from the company’s own PBM Mariner. Initially retaining the twin tailfins of its predecessor, the prototype XPB2M was officially launched in Nov 1941, but first flew in June 1942.
