Companies will often claim they "can't" give you the rights to your own stories, hiding behind the copyright of the fictional universe itself, but there are innumerable workarounds to this.

Companies that hire you to work on IP often count on your enthusiasm for the fictional universe to override your self-respect and business sense. They'll milk you for free labor, pay below market rates, and hoard the rights to your work.
Don't screw over future workers by accepting these terms.
