Prestige doesn't really equate to quality of the work, but more the flashier the story.
Research publishing is such a farce. Just put it all on blogs openly!

Identity is weird. Isn't it?
I full acknowledge academia has become a shitshow. Temp workers are not being renewed, no matter how integral they are to teaching, retired/deceased lecturers aren't being replaced, student intakes are increasing despite fewer staff.

Academia has turned into am absolutely shit show (not that employment model was ever good).
Retired/deceased staff not being replaced, temp staff not being renewed, yet pressure to take more students.

in research it's equally yet differently horrible. You have to fund your own job and your work is only seen as worthy if it generates a lot of grant money and "high impact" papers

I still feel a great loss from being excluded after my 10.5 years of PhD was downgraded at the last hurdle to an MPhil...MPhil...a 1 year degree!
But I still believe I'd thrive in that environment. I have so many good ideas for projects and teaching.
