Cedric Morris painted Malveira, Lisbon after escaping the dreary British winter of 1956. He travelled to Portugal to scout the region for rare wild bulbs, seeds, and distinctive Portuguese flowers to bring back to his garden at Benton End in Suffolk.

This must be the only painting by John Constable of a haunted house: the magnificent Tudor Cowdray House, #WestSussex, which burnt down in the 18th C (due to a curse, states #folklore). Researcher David Scanlan noted reports of two ghosts, both of women who walk about near the ruins. #PhantomsFriday
