Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow

Cedric Morris painted Malveira, Lisbon after escaping the dreary British winter of 1956. He travelled to Portugal to scout the region for rare wild bulbs, seeds, and distinctive Portuguese flowers to bring back to his garden at Benton End in Suffolk.
This must be the only painting by John Constable of a haunted house: the magnificent Tudor Cowdray House, #WestSussex, which burnt down in the 18th C (due to a curse, states #folklore). Researcher David Scanlan noted reports of two ghosts, both of women who walk about near the ruins.

“I like de landscapes of Constable; he is always picturesque, of a fine colour, and de lights always in de right places; but he makes me call for my great coat and umbrella.”
