Just replayed Paper Mario 64 for the first time in probably a decade and I've developed a new theory. I have very little evidence in support of it, but nothing that I can think of that outright disproves it.

It seems super obvious now that I'm consciously aware of it, but it somehow never occurred to me that they were different colors. It doesn't help that they do very occasionally forget to make them a different color, but they seem consistent throughout the main games and most spin-offs.

I'm playing through every Mario game in order, and I caught a detail that I never noticed before.
I've always noticed that Luigi's overalls were made more purple in SMW, but I somehow never realized that they've kept that change ever since. Although they've desaturated them quite a bit by now.
