The woman, Estelle, says she was told by a state employee she could vote in local elections. Her interview with Customs makes clear they knew her voting history. She was then detained for 30 hours and threatened with deportation.
Estelle voted once in an election for city council/school board in 2023. Her attorney says “it’s clear as day she wasn’t trying to break the law.” An immigration judge has now canceled her deportation proceedings.
