These findings echo the debate in adult research raised by Rey-Mermet et al. (2018), suggesting that results based on a single inhibition paradigm cannot be generalised to other paradigms.
I propose a 3-level framework that clarifies ways of conceptualising mechanisms and encourages their integration:
• Micro-level: a process-oriented perspective
• Relational level: on associations between variables
• Macro-level: a theory-oriented perspective
My hope is that this framework, although imperfect, can act as a starting point to encourage future dialogue.
So please don't hesitate to reach out with any thoughts! I would love to hear them!

New open access paper in @jcgntn.bsky.social: bit.ly/4bt2D8Q! We developed and validated an open-source cognitive control test battery (bit.ly/4ql9gyP), using a transparent, open science approach. We worked on this for 6 (!!) years, with many lab members, so I'm thrilled to see this published.

We found no support for a unitary inhibition construct. Instead, the stop-signal task (SST) was related to symbolic arithmetic in both 5- and 7-year-olds. In contrast, the flanker task was related to non-symbolic maths, but only in 7-year-olds.

We investigated task-specific links to arithmetic to understand inconsistencies in the literature, now published open-access in Child Development:

A great collaboration with @sixtine-o.bsky.social and André Knops!
